The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) was established on 1st July 1957 and served as the state’s energy provider and distributor. In accordance with G.O.114 dated 08.10.2008 and the Electricity Act 2003, TNEB was restructured after 53 years into a holding company, "TNEB Ltd.," with two subsidiaries: Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd. (TANTRANSCO) and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd. (TANGEDCO), effective from 01.11.2010. Later, the Government of Tamil Nadu, through G.O.(Ms) Nos. 6 and 7 dated 24.01.2024, approved the formation of TNPGCL and TNGECL to take over the thermal and green energy businesses of TANGEDCO respectively, and merge TEDA with TNGECL. These entities were incorporated on 09.02.2024 and 10.02.2024, with the provisional Transfer Scheme coming into effect on 06.03.2024 via G.O.(Ms) No.32. Subsequently, the name change of TANGEDCO to TNPDCL was approved by the Registrar of Companies on 27.06.2024.
